Languages put restrictions on large sonority distances
نویسندگان
چکیده
An underlying assumption in terms of sonority distances is that clusters with large are more common than those small distances, as captured the unmarked status and formalized constraints on consonant clusters. A cross-linguistic survey attested 357 languages reveals not most commonly attested. Rather, there a point distance at which largest number When exceeds particular value, starts to decrease, regardless scales tested. The finding puts test, suggesting potential constraint prevents from surfacing.

Restrictions on Tree Adjoining Languages
Several methods are known for parsing languages generated by Tree Adjoining Grammars (TAGs) in O(n) worst case running time. In this paper we investigate which restrictions on TAGs and TAG derivations are needed in order to lower this O(n) time complexity, without introducing large runtime constants, and without losing any of the generative power needed to capture the syntactic constructions in...
متن کاملOn large distances in planar sets
Let n k denote the number of times the kth largest distance occurs among a set S of n points in the Euclidean plane. We prove that n2 ~< 2~n for arbitrary set S. This upper bound is sharp. We consider the set S of n arbitrary points in R 2. We denote the largest distance between two points in S by dl, the second largest by d2. Let us denote by nl resp. n2 the number of distances equal to dl res...
متن کاملOn the Graph of Large Distances
For a set S of points in the plane, let d, > d 2 > • denote the different distances determined by S.. Consider the graph G(S, k) whose vertices are the elements of S, and two are joined by an edge ifI their distance is at least d, ; . It is proved that the chromatic number of G(S, k) is at most 7 if IS1 const k 2 . If S consists of the vertices of a convex polygon and ~S1 >_ const k 2 , then th...
متن کاملSlippin’ and Slidin’ on the Sonority Scale
In this paper we will consider a widely attested process: LIQUID-GLIDE ALTERNATION, a phenomenon that can be observed in many areas of phonological research, such as studies of disordered language, historical sound changes and nonpathological speech errors and also in child language. You can see examples of this process in first language acquisition data from different languages in (1). Liquids...
متن کاملSonority-Driven Reduction
0. Combinations of Sonority and Stress In their analysis of Imdlawn Tashlhiyt Berber syllabification, Prince and Smolensky (1993) postulate that different types of prominence, such as sonority and syllabicity, should align—a phenomenon they term prominence alignment. This concept is implemented by Prince and Smolensky using families of inherently-ranked constraints that are derived from combini...
